As the year quickly draws to a close much faster than I would like, I find myself looking back at 2011 with my 20/20 goggles on. A year of new beginnings, bittersweet endings, and lots of lessons learned along the way. If I could use one word to describe this year it would be overwhelmed. In so many ways.... With love, sadness, pressure, hope, joy......but most of all love. It's been a year of sleepless nights, doubt, worry, faith, happiness. And watching my soul crack wide open as I grew.
I am reminded....
... Time really does heal all wounds… regardless of how you might feel right now. You can heal where you did not think you could heal.
... Laughing, crying, joy and anger… they are all a vital. And all make us human.
... Today, you are creating memories. Don't underestimate the power of these memories because you will reminisce about them....and someday you will need the reminder that life is just that much sweeter.
... People deserve a second chance, but probably not a third.
... Best friends don't have to be the ones you spend the most time with, just the ones you have the greatest memories with.
... Sometimes we just need to quiet our head and our heart.
... Hugging is really good medicine and can say things you don't have the words for.
... Sometimes life is better experienced on the rested side of sleep. And, it’s okay to fall apart for a little while.
... Life is a miracle.
Recently, we lost my paternal grandmother....and that's after losing my maternal grandmother and my father-in-law. All within a span of three months. To say life has been stressful is an understatement. But as I look back over this year, I am reminded that life is truly beautiful. And we have so many things to be thankful for, proud of, and blessed by. Yet most of all, I am reminded once again that all that is broken will one day be made new. And this is true for all three of these special people.....and, my dad has lots of company now.

20 lessons I have learned along the way....
20 lessons I have learned along the way....
It's been an interesting month to say the least. With our crazy work schedules coupled with a certain amount of upheaval outside of our normal busy season, taking a step back to gain perspective allows me to take a look at all that we accomplished while we were down in the weeds. And, I took a moment to look back over this blog today and read some of the entries over the course of the last few years. And while I haven't been as faithful to writing as I would have liked, the moments that were posted gave me pause for thought as I reflected on the events of the past few years. It's an interesting experience as the older generation begins to pass on leaving the subsequent generation as the new "older" generation....bringing me one step closer to that being in that "older" generation. Losing a relative is never easy; and as we are now dealing with the reality of end of my grandmother's life, it's been an evening of discussion and reflection as we begin to put the pieces together for the remaining weeks of her journey.
And, as I began to reflect on all of these moments and crazy busy weeks over the past month, I have come to realize that an important part of keeping perspective is to have some of the lessons you have learned along the way written down as a reminder not to get too caught up in life. So, here are 20 lessons I have learned along the way, in no particular order....mostly for me to have recorded somewhere. But, I hope they are a reminder for you too.
1. Laughing, crying, joy and anger… All are a vital. All make us human.
2. The greatest blessings in life are uncovered with simple, steady awareness.
3. Be respectful of others and make them feel good.
4. Life is made up of three things. Choices, Decisions, and Consequences.
5. We are all weird. And life is weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we call it love.
6. Take lots of pictures. Someday you’ll be really glad you did.
7. Your actions now create memories you will reminisce and talk later in life.
8. Stepping outside of your comfort zone will put things into perspective from an angle you can’t grasp now.
9. Taking ownership of failure builds the foundation for success.
10. Supporting, guiding, and making contributions to other people is one of life’s greatest rewards. In order to get, you have to give.
11. Invest time, energy and money in yourself every day.
12. Excel at what you do.
13. Sooner or later, you just want to be around the people who make you smile.
14. Too often we judge people on too little information. Instead of judging someone for what they do or where they are in their life, figure out why they do what they do and how they got to where they are.
15. Nobody ever feels 100% ready when an opportunity arises because most great opportunities in life force us to grow emotionally and intellectually.
16. Having a thousand credentials on the wall will not make you a success or a decent human being. But being what you were born to be and genuinely helping people will.
17. There is nothing to hold you back except yourself.
18. A hero is someone who makes a positive difference in someone else’s life – even if it’s only one other person’s life.
19. Ask yourself every day, "Are you worth imitating?"
20. Take time to count your blessings every day.
