Be true to your own goals

the art of setting goals seems to have no art at all.  i have read countless articles, blogs, and books and have come to the conclusion that there is no perfect way or one better way to keep yourself on track.  you have to do what will work for you.  keeping this in mind, i have several things that i do to keep myself on track every day and that really work for me.  it's hard to balance all that life throws at you, while purposefully trying to pay attention to a few of the small moments each day so that you don't fall into that trap of wishing your life away or trying too hard to do it all, perfectly, and be everyone's everything. and while organization helps a lot, feeling accomplished by not over-committing yourself to more than you can handle, while preparing for the unexpected helps tremendously.   the OCD control freak in me struggles with trying to control life, yet knowing that i can't and must let life run its course....and simply learning to just let go.  not to try to perfect everything.  and learn that failing is part of learning.  and it's okay to rely on others and allow them to be there for you, just as you are for them.

yearly. three words.

these words define what i want my year to be.  they are kind of overall themes for my life that create a direction and keep me focused on more of a purpose-filled life.  my words this year are connect.  grace.  and purpose.

connect.  for some people, connections come rather easily.  i have had to work at it.  painfully shy in my early years, it was hard to forge those relationships, especially in large crowds.  and, while the struggle still happens on a daily basis, i find myself more mindful of it each day as i try to show my love for life, others, and faith.  in business and in my personal life, true connections are those that show weakness and strength.

connect.
family.  friends.  life.  customers.  stronger.  body.  mind
spirit.  earth.  love.  emotion.  reconnect.  learning.

grace.  one of my favorite quotes is 'with all of your heart, ask for grace and let go.'  this speaks to me on so many different levels and applies to so many different areas of my life.  and grace is such an amazing word in and of itself and can speak volumes with just 5 little letters.  i aspire to grace, ask for grace, and try to show grace.

grace.
give.  trust.  pure.  humble.  elegance.  moral strength.
let go.  laugh.  freely given.   show, act, give believe.

purpose. when we find ourselves without passion or purpose, or alone without a project to occupy us, we can become nervous and self-critical about what we should be doing and feeling.  finding purpose and allowing ourselves the space to be as we are gives us the passion for life we all look for on a daily basis.  while some jobs in and of themselves, exude a purpose every day (soldier=defender of our freedoms, doctor=saving lives, bringing new life), the life a property manager is not so.... glamorous? we provide housing?  i guess that seems purposeful, but in reality, what i do most of the day involves keeping scams off of properties, frivolous claims from owner's assets, and ensuring that we are finding that perfect balance between resident, owner, and our company.  sexy, no?  hardly purposeful at a higher level.  dealing with so much negativity every day can make anyone become jaded.  so my third goal is to find purpose every day.  even in the mundane.  what did i do today that made a difference?  what was my purpose today at work, home?  and, while my job somewhat defines who i am (although not completely), it's not what gives me purpose every day.  my purpose is a higher calling.  one that i look at every day to ensure that i am living according to His will.  and despite my job, or in spite of it, i look for my daily purpose to be outside of what i do for a living.  rather focusing on the job intertwined with who i connected with today, or ensuring that i connected with someone specific (family, friends etc.), or if i did my best.

purpose.
home.  work.  family.  friends.
daily.  spiritually.

yearly.  three large goals + 10 steps.  personal and professional.

each year, i come up with three main goals in each category, personal and professional, that i would like to accomplish.  this could be something I want accomplished within a year, or over several.  and from those overall goals, i make 10 steps to reach that goal, in order, and begin working on those much smaller goals, scratching off each one as they are accomplished.  i have found over the years that, while we all try and establish goals, with the determined intent of reaching them, if we don't have steps to get there, we will never make it.  it either becomes so overwhelming that we give up, we forget where we are, or stray off track.  we all have the 'ooh, new, shiny!' syndrome.  and, i have found that doing it this way keeps my on track.  and really, i am a total list person.  there is nothing more satisfying than scratching something off of a list to create a sense of accomplishment.  and Lord knows we all need to feel that sense of accomplishment every day!

monthly.  simple goals by category.

i recently read a post over here and was inspired to try these simple, easy purposeful goals, set monthly.  i love the fact that, even though they might not be achieved every single day, the overall goal is to create better habits and keep life from taking over each day, creating an environment where we feel like life is passing us by.  brilliant!

love this.....

so my challenge to you is, despite the fact that it is the middle of march already....go set some goals.  challenge yourself.  big or small.  whatever works for you.  today is the day to go down the road to reaffirming your goals, personal growth, or reinventing a better you.

and to be simply.amazing!

get down like james brown

The one thing that can solve most of our problems is dancing.  ~james brown

sometimes there are no words in those times, and tears don't hide the tragedies or make it go away any faster. God is good, but that doesn't make life easier.  but, as life has started to return to normal over here in my little slice of the world, i am taking in this sense of normalcy and cherishing every moment.  trying to remember how great life can be.  and, living and experiencing all those fleeting moments can be so hard..... it's amazing how crazy life can become in the blink of an eye.  and getting it reigned back in can seem so insurmountable.  but, one thing i have learned over the last year is that, once you get through those tough times, you realize that those moments are actually your finest hours.  it's hard to experience the highs without the lows in life, but we look back on them simply to appreciate our lessons learned and be proud of how far we have come.

and, today i sit here, with my heart pointed up, glad for that ever-new day that comes every 24 hours.  but mostly, i'm just thankful for where i sit today and for the ability to dance through life with my husband......and so many other amazing people.......by my side.

More of life's little lessons

As the year quickly draws to a close much faster than I would like, I find myself looking back at 2011 with my 20/20 goggles on.  A year of new beginnings, bittersweet endings, and lots of lessons learned along the way.  If I could use one word to describe this year it would be overwhelmed.  In so many ways....  With love, sadness, pressure, hope, joy......but most of all love.  It's been a year of sleepless nights, doubt, worry, faith, happiness.  And watching my soul crack wide open as I grew.

I am reminded....

... Time really does heal all wounds… regardless of how you might feel right now.  You can heal where you did not think you could heal.
... Laughing, crying, joy and anger… they are all a vital.  And all make us human.
... Today, you are creating memories.  Don't underestimate the power of these memories because you will reminisce about them....and someday you will need the reminder that life is just that much sweeter.
... People deserve a second chance, but probably not a third.
... Best friends don't have to be the ones you spend the most time with, just the ones you have the greatest memories with.
... Sometimes we just need to quiet our head and our heart.
... Hugging is really good medicine and can say things you don't have the words for.
... Sometimes life is better experienced on the rested side of sleep.  And, it’s okay to fall apart for a little while.
... Life is a miracle.

Recently, we lost my paternal grandmother....and that's after losing my maternal grandmother and my father-in-law.  All within a span of three months.  To say life has been stressful is an understatement.  But as I look back over this year, I am reminded that life is truly beautiful.  And we have so many things to be thankful for, proud of, and blessed by.  Yet most of all, I am reminded once again that all that is broken will one day be made new.  And this is true for all three of these special people.....and, my dad has lots of company now.

20 lessons I have learned along the way....

20 lessons I have learned along the way....

It's been an interesting month to say the least.  With our crazy work schedules coupled with a certain amount of upheaval outside of our normal busy season, taking a step back to gain perspective allows me to take a look at all that we accomplished while we were down in the weeds.  And, I took a moment to look back over this blog today and read some of the entries over the course of the last few years.  And while I haven't been as faithful to writing as I would have liked, the moments that were posted gave me pause for thought as I reflected on the events of the past few years.  It's an interesting experience as the older generation begins to pass on leaving the subsequent generation as the new "older" generation....bringing me one step closer to that being in that "older" generation.  Losing a relative is never easy; and as we are now dealing with the reality of end of my grandmother's life, it's been an evening of discussion and reflection as we begin to put the pieces together for the remaining weeks of her journey.

And, as I began to reflect on all of these moments and crazy busy weeks over the past month, I have come to realize that an important part of keeping perspective is to have some of the lessons you have learned along the way written down as a reminder not to get too caught up in life.  So, here are 20 lessons I have learned along the way, in no particular order....mostly for me to have recorded somewhere.  But, I hope they are a reminder for you too.

1. Laughing, crying, joy and anger… All are a vital.  All make us human.
2. The greatest blessings in life are uncovered with simple, steady awareness.
3. Be respectful of others and make them feel good.
4. Life is made up of three things.  Choices, Decisions, and Consequences.
5. We are all weird. And life is weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we call it love.
6. Take lots of pictures.  Someday you’ll be really glad you did.
7. Your actions now create memories you will reminisce and talk later in life.
8. Stepping outside of your comfort zone will put things into perspective from an angle you can’t grasp now.
9. Taking ownership of failure builds the foundation for success.
10. Supporting, guiding, and making contributions to other people is one of life’s greatest rewards. In order to get, you have to give.
11. Invest time, energy and money in yourself every day.
12. Excel at what you do.
13. Sooner or later, you just want to be around the people who make you smile.
14. Too often we judge people on too little information. Instead of judging someone for what they do or where they are in their life, figure out why they do what they do and how they got to where they are.
15. Nobody ever feels 100% ready when an opportunity arises because most great opportunities in life force us to grow emotionally and intellectually.
16. Having a thousand credentials on the wall will not make you a success or a decent human being. But being what you were born to be and genuinely helping people will.
17. There is nothing to hold you back except yourself.
18. A hero is someone who makes a positive difference in someone else’s life – even if it’s only one other person’s life.
19. Ask yourself every day, "Are you worth imitating?"
20. Take time to count your blessings every day.

What are your life's lessons?
